The food industry likes to create fancy sounding ‘buzzwords’ that grab your attention, then market all of their products to you this way.

If you remember, years ago the diet trend switched from low fat to low carb diets, Well, the food industry giants were full aware of this and found out a tricky little way of telling you their products have less carbs than they actually do!

As a result, many products on the grocery shelves are labeled with ‘Net Carbs’ or ‘Impact Carbs’

Again, these terms sound important or official, but they’re just made up marketing terms from the food industry to get you to buy the product.

HOW CARBS AND ‘NET CARBS’ ARE MEASURED, WHAT’S THE SKINNY?

The USFDA calculates carbohydrate content for any food by subtracting grams of protein, fat, water, and ash from the total weight of the food.

The number is then listed on the food label as total carbohydrates. (this we can trust)

Food Manufacturers, on the other hand, calculate ‘Net Carbs’ by taking total carbohydrates and subtracting fiber, glycerin, and sugar alcohols (all forms of carbohydrates).

This ‘calculation’ makes it seem there are less carbohydrates in their products, and suggests that the products don’t raise blood sugar and fat storing even though they do!

WHY THIS IS BAD NEWS FOR THE UNINFORMED:

‘Net Carb’ and ‘Impact Carb’ labeling has expanded to hundreds of other foods and will make you think you are eating fewer carbs and calories than you actually are.

Yeah, Does that tick you off too?

Fact is, we should be cutting back or eliminating all together processed carbs like added sugars (fructose), and stuff like cookies, cakes, breads and pasta from refined flowers. OH that hurts!

These sneaky food industry marketers would have you believe that THEIR cookies and cakes, etc, are OK for you and they are different than the rest, because, they have less ‘Net Carbs’ than their competitors.

Lets start with the dumbbell curl for the biceps as an example. Now remember that the weight you choose will be determined by how far along you are in your training. Now, in this exercise you start with the dumbbells at your side with the weight being down.  You then move the weight slowly and smoothly up to your shoulders. This action trains your positive strength level. When you get to this position, pause a second and contract your biceps at the top of the movement. This trains your static strength level.

From this point lower the dumbbells slowly back to the starting position,exhaling as you progress down. This trains your negative strength level.

Here in lies to problem most people have, in that they don’t concentrate on the static or negative levels of the exercise. Most, put all the focus on the lifting part or positive level of the action, never pausing or contracting properly at the top, and moving way too fast during the negative part of the action. It is not the speed here that turns fat into muscle, it’s in the technique. Very important to take note of this!

As a result, they only get one third of the benefit from the exercise. Really, it’s probably less than that because the negative and static parts of the exercise can make deeper inroads into your existing strength levels. This is a real benefit in that it can lead to greater progress much quicker, that is if you give your body enough time to rest it. When we rest our body, we give it time to heal itself from the previous workout.

Why is strength so important to us? Besides the obvious, strength equals muscle growth (fat loss), which leads to faster metabolism when we rest, which leads to faster fat loss and not to mention the various other health benefits we recieve, thats another story for another time.
